Fawley have failed in their battle to avoid relegation from Southern Electric Premier League, Division 1.
They lost their final ‘must win’ match by 47 runs to Hursley Park, alongside whom they are relegated.
Despite the efforts of Tom Tennant (30) and Matt Mettam (30), Hursley were struggling at 109-5 in mid-innings.
Teenage Western Australian left-arm spinner Elijah Turriff-Smith (3-40) did his bit, but Matt Branford (37), Nick Priddle (23) and Oli Green, with 24 not out, made important middle-order runs as Hursley reached 195-8.
Paul Marks (30) and Andy Ward (24) had Fawley ticking along at 69-1, but having reached 112-3 the oilmen suffered a terrible collapse as five wickets went down for only four runs.
Left-armer Matt Oliver, champion bowler in Hursley’s Division 2 promotion winning side last summer, weighed in with 5-32 as Fawley sank to 148 all out.
A magnificent seven wicket haul from Shane Brewer made sure Hook and Newnham Basics won their final match by four wickets at Andover.
Both sides went into the game, knowing if they lost and Fawley won they would be relegated, but with the oilmen losing at Hursley Park, the result between Hook and Andover was academic.
Brewer (7-17) didn’t know this as he ripped through Andover, who slumped to 49-8.
Captain Mike Adams (20) and top scorer Daniel Foy (39) batting at number 10, made sure Andover had some score to defend as they were all out for 121.
Hook’s reply got off to good start as Ben Thane (31) and Jordan Hobday (11) put on 47 for the first wicket.
Teenager Kieran Thomson (30) kept the innings going in the right direction, until three wicket fell for three run to leave the visitors on 107-6.
It was left to Ben Allnutt and Spencer Champ to make sure of the victory.
A saturated Hambledon pitch denied South African all-rounder Nono Pongolo the opportunity of heading both the Division 1 batting and bowling charts.
The frustrated Gauteng Academy cricketer finished third in both categories.
