A fine team performance carried Atherley into the last 16 of the Yetton Trophy with an 88-61 win over Bridport.
The Southampton club shone on their own carpet and won the two away rinks on aggregate to set up a date with Adur from Sussex a week today (Feb 1).
Club president-in-waiting Marion Collins teamed up with Jean Arnaud, impressive Ella Dibble and Jean Terrell for a 28-10 win over Annie Bowden at Hill Lane.
The second Atherley home foursome of Anne Pearce, Gill Hayes, Mo Hawkins and Wendy Line accelerated over the closing ends to overcome Sue Hosking 23-15.
Jenny McAusland, Jackie Farmer, Ann Littlewood and Margaret Darkin continued the Atherley success 22-20 against Barbara Iversen in Dorset where Jean Eyres, Jackie Mainwaring, Pat Sutton and Joan Penfold were pipped 16-15 by Bridport's former England outdoor international Sue Hawksworth.
Atherley came off second best against Dorset opposition, 74-63 against Moonfleet in the Egham Trophy. Dink Mintrum (16-13 against Alf Sawkins) gained the Hampshire club's solitary victory at Weymouth but Gary Carter lost 22-12 having been just 13-10 behind at 15 ends to Neil Burroughs.
In Southampton Roger Stonham led 9-2 but was pegged back to 18-18 by Moonfleet's Liberty Trophy skip Barry Patterson while Mick Barrett was 16-12 up on 15 ends only to fall 21-17 to Mike Gale.
Bill Groves was the last-gasp hero when Atherley recorded an 84-81 triumph against Adur in the London and Southern Counties' Shield. With the scores on 81 apiece he snatched a three on the final end - despite crashing 30-14 in Sussex. Denny Graydon found the going even tougher at Southwick stumbling 32-14 but the home rinks hit peak form with Mick Barrett (35-8) and Carter (21-11) in great heart.
l Zone 14 champions Arun pressed on towards the Mason Trophy (senior ladies' double rink championship) by defeating fellow Sussex club Wealden 43-36.
