SAINTS legend Lawrie McMenemy went to Staplewood today thinking he was going to cook burgers - and ended up handing out bottles of Coca Cola to Claus Lundekvam and his fellow players instead!
Saints had sent out a press release yesterday afternoon saying football board director McMenemy would be available for photo purposes inside a burger van.
That was because McMenemy has agreed to serve burgers from a refreshment stand outside St Mary's before Saints' pre-season friendly next summer as part of Coca-Cola's Buy a Player promotion - if supporters can raise £100,000.
To enter, fans from all FL and SPL clubs simply purchase a promotional bottle or multipack of Coca-Cola or Coke Zero and text in the unique code to 80094 or enter it at www.coca-cola.co.uk/football.
Upon entering, fans will find out instantly if they are winners of money for their club. Prizes range from 50p all the way up to £100,000 and winners of the £100,000 prizes will also win a personal cash prize of £10,000.
Saints fans have some way to go - they have raised less than £70 so far, but the competition has only been running for a week!
But burgers were not on the menu today when McMenemy turned up at Staplewood. Saints had managed to bring a huge burger van to the training ground, but only bottles of Coca Cola were inside for the Saints legend to hand out!
The reason for the burger-less state of affairs, according to a spokesperson, was that they would go against the healthy eating ethos promoted at Staplewood.
