AFC Totton and Sholing are safely through to the second round of the Red Insure Cup.
Both emerged triumphant in Hampshire derbies tonight – Totton triumphing 2-0 at Craig Davis’s Fleet Town and Sholing winning a high-scoring affair 4-2 at Bashley.
With an important FA Trophy tie awaiting at Cinderford on Saturday, Totton made seven changes to their starting 11 but produced what manager Steve Riley termed “a totally professional performance.”
Joe Maxwell span and netted the first following a James Jennings corner before Dan Beckles played in Taylor Edwards who squeezed between two defenders, rounded the ’keeper and slotted home.
Daniel Mason twice gave Sholing the lead, but the Boatmen were pegged back on each occasion by Bashley’s Clive Makoni (penalty) and Mitchell Speechley-Price.
But Sholing, who make a swift return to Bashley Road in the Trophy on Saturday, scored twice in the closing minutes through fit-again striker Alex Baldacchino.
Having put the visitors ahead on 79 minutes, Baldacchino struck again in stoppage time, set up by a superb run from Jude Nwachukwu.
Poole Town won the Dorset derby 3-0 against Wimborne.
The Dolphins lost on-loan Gosport winger Mike Gosney to injury early on. It was his replacement Carl Preston who opened the scoring before Mark Jermyn and Dan Munday weighed in.
