Saints stormed into a 3-0 half-time lead at The Valley with George O’Brien, Terry Paine and David Burnside on target. John Sydenham and Burnside netted in the second period.

Saints keeper Campbell Forsyth suffered a broken leg early on. With defender David Webb in goal, the visitors surged into the lead with goals from Ian St John and Ian Callaghan before Ron Davies replied.

Francis Lee rescued a point for the hosts 18 minutes from time after Ron Davies had put Saints ahead in the first half.

Perry Groves struck a late leveller for Saints from 30 yards after the Dons had taken the lead through a double from current Bristol City boss Steve Cotterill. Iain Dowie had provided Saints’ first equaliser.
1998 Arsenal 1 Saints 1 (Howell).
David Howell struck a second half leveller against the reigning Premier League champions after Nicolas Anelka had put the hosts into a half-time lead.
2006 Cardiff 1 Saints 0.
Saints were beaten at Ninian Park by a Steven Thompson strike six minutes from time.
2009 Oldham 1 Saints 3 (Hammond, Lambert, Connolly).
Dean Hammond, with his first goal for the club, and Rickie Lambert put Saints in command with goals inside the opening 23 minutes at Boundary Park. Sub David Connolly added a third eight minutes from time in this League 1 encounter.
