AFC TOTTON boss Steve Riley has a goalkeeping dilemma to solve ahead of tomorrow’s FA Trophy preliminary round tie at Cinderford Town.
Does he stick with former Sholing stopper Matt Renouf who claimed the man-of-the-match honours in last Saturday’s 1-1 league draw against Bridgwater Town and kept a clean sheet at Fleet on Tuesday in the Red Insure Cup?
Or does he recall former Saints Academy ’keeper Steve Mowthorpe, who was ruled out of the Bridgwater game by a one-match suspension – ironically for being sent off at Cinderford in the league three weeks ago?
That game ended in a calamitous 4-0 defeat for the Stags who were already two down before Mowthorpe got his marching orders.
In fairness to the Totton No1, it was an error-ridden performance by his teammates and, when he brought down Cinderford dangerman Garyn Preen – a former academy colleague at St Mary’s – he had been left horribly exposed by another defensive howler. Totton have got their act together since then and head to Gloucestershire tomorrow buoyed by a three-match unbeaten run.
With £2,500 on offer to the winners, the prize money is not to be sniffed at, and should Totton prove successful, their November 1 first qualifying round visitors would be former Football League club Hereford.
The Bulls were kicked out of the Football Conference in the summer due to financial irregularities and now reside a division above Totton in the Southern Premier.
Mulling over his goalkeeping dilemma, Riley said: “Matt Renouf’s done brilliantly and Steve Mowthorpe’s done nothing wrong all season apart from being sent off. Steve’s been phenomenal, he’s been one of our best players.
“All I want is a clean sheet.”
Liam Hibberd, Nathaniel Sherborne, Liam Gilbert and Kyle O’Brien were rested at Fleet on Tuesday, while Craig Feeney, Rob Flooks, Mowthorpe and Zac Mouland were on the bench.
