Sunderland manager Gus Poyet described today’s 8-0 defeat at Saints as his most embarrassing experience in football.
The Black Cats boss admitted some of his players had “given up” during an incredible second half at St Mary’s, as the home side netted five times after the break.
“I think it’s probably the most embarrassing time I have in a football pitch,” said Poyet.
“You think maybe you will never get these situations, but unfortunately sometimes it’s your turn. It’s unacceptable really.
“I’m really sorry for the fans, they’ve been excellent, they’ve travelled a long way and have had to look at a very difficult game.”
Poyet felt the game could have been different if Steven Fletcher had been given a penalty at 2-0, after being brought down in the area by Saints keeper Fraser Forster – but referee Andre Marriner waved the appeals away.
“We started very well, were quite in control, we conceded an own-goal that is unique, because it’s not a usual own-goal, then the 2-0 maybe we can say we were a little bit unlucky in the clearance.
“I know it’s 8-0 and not going to put this as excuse, but the turning point is probably the penalty (at 2-0).”
However, Poyet added: “There were a few players today who gave up and I know who they are.
“I know who to choose, I know who can play, what players I can count on in difficult situations.”
