SAINTS became the ninth team to hit eight or more goals in a Premier League game when they hammered Sunderland at St Mary’s.

March 4 1995: Manchester United 9 Ipswich Town 0.
Andrew Cole became the first player to score five times in a Premier League game.
George Burley’s Ipswich, relegated at the end of the season, also conceded goals to Roy Keane, Mark Hughes (2) and Paul Ince.
November 22 2009: Tottenham Hotspur 9 Wigan 1.
Jermain Defoe scored five goals in the second half for Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham.
Spurs only led 1-0 at half-time through a Peter Crouch effort. But further second half strikes followed by Aaron Lennon, David Bentley and Nico Kranjèar, Paul Scharner had given Wigan hope on 57 minutes by making it 3-1.
September 19, 1999: Newcastle United 8 Sheffield Wednesday 0.
Former Saint Alan Shearer belted five goals – including a first half hat-trick – as The Toon romped to victory.
Two of Shearer’s goals came from the penalty spot.
Aaron Hughes, Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed were also on target.
May 9 2010: Chelsea 8 Wigan Athletic 0.
Thrashed 9-1 at Tottenham earlier in the season, Wigan received another humbling in the capital as Chelsea clinched the title.
Didier Drogba struck a hat-trick, including a penalty, with Nicolas Anelka (2), Frank Lampard (also a penalty), Solomon Kalou and Ashley also scoring.
December 23 2012: Chelsea 8 Aston Villa 0.
Ramires struck twice in this pre-Christmas rout.
Fernando Torres, David Torres, Branislav Ivanovic, Frank Lampard, Oscar (penalty) and Eden Hazard also netted.
February 6 1999: Nottingham Forest 1 Manchester United 8.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær became the first, and so far only, sub to ever score four goals in a Premier League game.
He struck all his goals in the last ten minutes at The City Ground, after Dwight Yorke and Andrew Cole had both scored twice.
May 11, 2008: Middlesbrough 8 Manchester City 1.
Afonso Alves netted a hat-trick as Sven-Goran Eriksson’s last game in charge of City ended with a humiliating defeat.
Stuart Downing (2), Adam Johnson, Fábio Rochemback and Jérémie Aliadière were also on target for Boro, with Elano replying late on.
August 11 2012: Manchester United 8 Arsenal 2.
Wayne Rooney led United’s remarkable rout with a hat-trick, with Ashley Young (2), Danny Welbeck, Nani and Park Ji-sung also scoring.
