Two late consolation goals by Toby Edwards were all newly promoted Trojans could manage from a 5-2 mauling at South League Premier Division 2 rivals Horsham.
Manager Mike Watts took his Trojans side into Mid-Sussex full of confidence after a 3-0 opening day success at Eastbourne and a 7-3 beating of Marlow.
But it all went wrong across the county border as Jack Dean, Matt Hough and Peter Neave fired Horsham into a 3-0 interval lead.
Noah Chinn, from a penalty stroke, and Hough put Horsham 5-0 up before Edwards put Trojans on the score-sheet.
