Winchester student Chris Amedu is celebrating a call up for England’s basketball team.
The 17-year-old – formerly of St George School in Southampton but now at Peter Symonds College – has been chosen for his country’s under-18 squad.
“Initially I couldn’t quite believe that I had been selected by the England committee,” says Chris, whose first taster session of basketball took place at primary school.
“But now it has sunk in I am thrilled.
“When I started playing for my secondary school team at St Georges in Year 10 it never crossed my mind that it would come to this.
“I progressed to playing national league in my first year of college and now the potential is to play for England. It’s incredible.
“I hadn’t been intending to play much basketball this year, in order to concentrate on my academic studies, but this selection has obviously changed things!”
Amedu is currently studying A levels in biology, philosophy and psychology.
