AFC Totton paid a penalty for wasting their first-half dominance as they slipped to a 2-1 FA Trophy defeat to Hereford United at the Testwood Stadium. Frenchman Serge Mor Diop scored the two easiest goals of his career, before Craig Feeney replied for Totton.
The opening half hour was largely one-way traffic with Totton pushing forward and enjoying a large slice of possession, forcing eight corners in the proces.
But they posed few threats to the Hereford goal, apart from Nathaniel Sherborne stabbing an early shooting chance just wide and Kyle O’Brien testing goalkeeper Luke Williams from 25 yards, the former Aldershot stopper diving to turn a near post shot around for a corner.
Totton’s corner kick count continued to rise but chances were at a premium – Craig Feeney shooting into the goalkeeper’s middrift and Liam Gilbert scuffing his shot after a left side raid by Zac Mouland. Ten minutes before half-time and completely against the run of play, Totton were caught by a Hereford sucker punch.
Hereford’s top scorer drew goalkeeper Steve Mowthorpe out of position and teed up a simple finish for the strapping Frenchman Serge Mor Diop.
The Stags struggled to fight back during a tepid opening to the second half and, confidence boosted, Hereford doubled their lead in the 70th minute after a goalkeeper clanger.
Mowthorpe appeared to have the situation under control when substitute Louis Ciani crossed from the right but inexplicably dropped the ball onto the foot of Mor Diop to make it 2-0.
Within 90 seconds Totton were back in the game – O’Brien chesting the ball off and entering the path of Feeney who rocketed a 30 yarder into the top corner.
Substitutes Joe Maxwell and Taylor Edwards both had half chances for Totton in the closing stages, while a last-gasp header by Feeney sailed agonisingly wide of the upright.
