Victor Wanyama continued the impressive scoring form of Saints’ central midfielders with what he described as his best ever goal, in the 1-0 win at Hull.
The Kenyan’s sensational third-minute strike separated the sides at the KC Stadium, as he thumped home first-time from 45 yards, after Tigers keeper Eldin Jakupovic had mis-hit a clearance straight to him.
The goal was the eighth scored by a Saints central midfield player in the Premier League this season – with that aspect of the team's performances having been one of the most striking of the Ronald Koeman era.
Last term, they tallied just four goals from players in those positions during their entire top-flight campaign.
Wanyama told the club: “I saw the goalkeeper out of the goal and I thought this is a good chance to finish first-time.
“I had a good contact and I saw the ball end up in the goal.
“I believe it is all about working hard. I’ve been working hard in training and I’ve been scoring a bit in training. I will say it is the best goal I’ve ever scored. I’ve never scored from that far.
“I’m very happy with the way we defended. We have not conceded, so we just have to score one. I’m very happy for how the team is performing.
“To play a team like Hull away is a very difficult thing. They are compact and come for you. We had to work hard, we did our job and credit goes to everyone. We are very happy with the three points.”
