Steven Davis described Victor Wanyama’s match-winning strike at Hull as a goal worthy of winning any game.

The Kenyan pounced on keeper Eldin Jakupovic’s poor clearance to slam home a stunning effort from 45 yards, sending Saints on their way to a tenth win in 11 league and cup matches.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game and that proved to be the case,” said Davis.

“Hull is always a difficult place to come and they’ve started the season well.

“The goal was worthy of winning any game.

“To be fair, it was only a half-chance and Victor put it in the only place it could’ve gone.

“He got the right connection on it and I was delighted with him getting the goal, it really set the tone for us.”

Saints now have eight Premier League goals from central midfield this season, although Davis is still searching for his first one.

The 29-year-old, who has again performed to an exceptionally high standard this season, is hoping to put that right soon.

“He [Victor] has started well and so have the other midfielders,” said Davis.

“I just need to get some myself, but I’m delighted with the run we’re on, we just need to keep it going and keep the momentum.

“We will just keep going and try to put the same effort in week-in, week-out.

“Hopefully the quality continues to shine through.

“We’ve got a lot of quality in amongst the team and, at the moment, it is shining through and we’re getting the right results, and we want to continue that.”
