JUSTIN Rose's dream of a first major win ended yesterday on Augusta's 17th hole.

The Englishman's valiant challenge for the green jacket that is slipped on the US Masters winner evaporated with a double bogey six on the 71st hole of the tournament.

Home player Zach Johnson lifted the title after a final-round 69 and one over par total of 289 proved too tough a target for Rose, pictured, and Tiger Woods to match.

Rose's performance will also live long in the memory - the 26-year-old showing tremendous courage to fight back from two double bogeys in his first three holes to mount a challenge for the year's first major.
