Fit-again Kenwyne Jones insists Saints need to display "mental toughness" to stand a chance of returning to the Premiership.
The Trinidad & Tobago striker has been sidelined with a persistent ankle injury for five weeks, but made his comeback in the second half at Birmingham last week and is now ready to start against Leeds.
During his time on the sidelines, Saints have slipped outside of the play-off places.
But Jones concedes this season presents a better chance than next of getting promoted.
He said: "It's going to be tough on us mentally, physically, it's going to be tough on the fans, it's going to be tough on everyone.
"Fingers crossed we win the games and results go our way and we get back into the play-offs.
"It's kind of a bit hard right now seeing the other teams (above us) but we hope all will end well.
"It needs mental toughness for those to stay in it and for us, apart from skill and determination, we need that more than anything else.
"It might be even harder to try and get back into the Premiership next season, so we have to push even harder to get back there now."
