GEORGE Burley hailed his side's battling qualities as they edged out Leeds 1-0 at St Mary's.
Bradley Wright-Phillips came off the bench to score the winner after what had been a frustrating afternoon for Saints.
Leeds played almost an hour with ten men following the sending -off of Alan Thompson but in the end Saints broke their resistance to move themselves within a point of the top six with two games remaining.
Burley said: "It was a game we needed to win which we did. At this time of year, with three games left, it's always that type of game - anxiety and pressure.
"They went down to ten men and made it difficult and defended well.
"We had a few chances when we could have scored but we had to be patient and keep battling away."
