2nd round 1st leg: Vitoria Guimaraes 3 Saints 3

A topsy turvy match saw Saints twice come from behind, and then probably thought they’d won when Paine volleyed in from the edge of the box on 82 minutes. Mick Channon and Ron Davies had scored for Saints in the opening hour.

Martin, Kirkup, Byrne, Fisher (Hollywood), McGrath, Gabriel, Paine, Channon (Saul), Davies, Walker, Sydenham

2nd round 2nd leg: Saints 5 Vitroria Guimaraes 1

1971-1972 UEFA Cup 1st round 1st leg: Saints 2 Athletic Bilbao 1

A terrific comeback from Saints against one of the Spanish football’s most successful clubs.

Having seen Jimmy Gabriel miss a fifth minute penalty and then gone 1-0 down just before the hour mark, fans at The Dell could be forgiven for thinking it wasn’t their day.

Jenkins levelled on 63 minutes and just six minutes later the hosts were awarded another penalty. This time Channon stepped up and he made no mistake.

1st round 2nd leg: Athletic Bilbao 2 Saints 0

Bilbao proved too strong on home turf, in front of 45,000 fans.

1976-77 European Cup Winners’ Cup 1st round 1st leg: Saints 4 Marseille 0

Back in Europe for the first time in five years, Saints weren’t daunted by the occasion.

A crazy six-minute spell just after the half hour mark sent the home fans delirious as Malcolm Waldron, Mick Channon and Peter Osgood all scored to make it 3-0 with just 35 minutes on the clock.

Marseille raised their hopes after winning a penalty soon after, but Turner saved it. Channon grabbed his second of the night late on.

Turner, Rodrigues, Steele, Holmes, Waldron, Blyth, Fisher, Channon (Earles), Osgood, Stokes, Williams

1st round 2nd leg: Marseille 2 Saints 1

Saints still went through with ease despite the loss.

The main talking point of the match was crowd trouble that caused the game to be delayed.

2nd round 1st leg: Carrick Rangers 2 Saints 5

Saints were expected to ease through comfortably against part timers Carrick Rangers, and after a few scares they secured a healthy first leg lead.

Mick Channon struck twice again, and Bobby Stokes, Peter Osgood and Jim McCalliog also scored.

The margin of victory may seem wide but the score was 3-2 with just 10 minutes to go.

3rd round 1st leg: Anderlecht 2 Saints 0

Anderlecht had won the Cup in the season prior to this one, and would win it the year after too.

What made things even harder was a questionable referee and allegations surrounding bribery in the match.

Mick Channon had a goal dubiously disallowed for offside when Saints were a goal down. A late second was very damaging indeed.

3rd round 2nd leg: Saints 2 Anderlecht 1

The Dell crowd were up for this one, and they knew they’d have to be if their team was to get through to the semi-finals.

Saints gave themselves hope on 61 minutes after Mick Channon was hauled down in the box. Full-back David Peach converted the penalty and everyone started to believe.

That belief looked to have been well placed when, on 79 minutes, Ted MacDougall stabbed in from close range.

At this stage the game was heading for extra time but Anderlecht had other ideas. Centre-back Jim Steele’s slip allowed the visitors to score with just seven minutes left.

1984-1985 UEFA Cup 1st round 1st leg: Saints 0 Hamburg 0

Champions of Europe just two seasons previously, Saints couldn’t have drawn many tougher opponents than Hamburg. A first leg win at the Dell was vital for their hopes of overall victory in the tie, but Saints had to settle for a 0-0 draw.

1st round 2nd leg: Hamburg 2 Saints 0

With the match looking like it may filter out into another goalless draw, Hamburg won a penalty on 68 minutes. They scored it and from then looked in control. Saints new a solitary goal would take them through on the away goals rule, but they were unable to find one. The Germans stuck again in added tome through Scottish international striker Mark McGhee to wrap up the win.

Shilton, Mills, Dennis, Williams, Wright, Whitlock, Holmes, Baker, Jordan, Moran, Wallace.

2003-2004 UEFA Cup 1st round 1st leg: Saints 1 Steaua Bucharest 1

Southampton’s first European match in 19 years didn’t start well, as the Romanian visitors went ahead with just 20 minutes played. Paul Jones was unable to keep out Claudiu Raducanu’s header, and Steaua’s superior start had been rewarded. Saints battled back, though and drew level just after half time when Kevin Phillips latched onto a ball from Chris Marsden. The pressure mounted, but Steaua held firm.
