GEORGE Burley was pleased with his defence as Saints recorded a priceless 1-0 win at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Saints had kept a clean sheet against Leeds the week earlier and the back four at Norwich was boosted by the returns of Gareth Bale and Alexander Ostlund.

Chris Baird moved across to partner skipper Claus Lundekvam in the centre of defence and Burley said: "I thought the defence was outstanding and solid as a rock in the second half.

"Claus Lundekvam didn't put a foot wrong. He turned in a real captain's performance.

"Our keeper had one save to make after the break but, other than that, just through balls to deal with.

"I thought we started brightly, took the game to Norwich, looked lively going forward, had opportunities and got a goal which we deserved in the first half.

"It was pleasing, because it's never easy coming to Norwich as they've got some good players."

It was Saints' first win at Carrow Road since a Matt Le Tissier hat-trick helped Alan Ball's side win 5-4 in April 1994.

There were a lot fewer goals at the weekend and Burley continued: "We were very disciplined.

"It was a good away performance - a clean sheet and a goal.

"Your last home game is always very important to round off the season so Norwich were certainly going to give it their best."
