Nottingham Forest could be about to try and snatch Leon Best from Saints.

And the 20-year-old striker, who broke into the first team towards the end of the 2006/07 season, has said he would be "over the moon" if Forest were to show real interest.

Having lost out in the League One play-off semi-finals to Yeovil, Forest are keen to bolster their firepower for next season.

Boss Colin Calderwood is considering selling last season's top scorer Grant Holt while he has released another striker, Jack Lester.

In addition, Kris Commons - Forest's second top scorer in 2006/07 - has yet to sign a new contract and could leave for nothing.

Reports in Nottingham suggest Best, who Forest tried to bring back to the player's home city before the transfer deadline, could be the man to fire them to promotion.

Best is out of contract at Saints but they are determined to keep him.

George Burley has backed up his desire to keep the club's young talent together by offering Best a new deal.

Best, who was signed by Saints from Forest's Nottingham rivals County in 2003, looked completely out of the picture at St Mary's until recently.

Best ended the season with four Championship goals for Saints from six starts plus another four from the bench.

Best, who is also attracting interest from Forest's East Midlands rivals Leicester, will have to weigh up his options.
