THERE was joy and despair in equal measure for two ex-Saints yesterday as Derby defeated West Brom 1-0 at Wembley to win the most lucrative prize in world football.

The Rams hit the £60m jackpot with their play-off final victory and bucked the trend of teams finishing third missing out on promotion.

Derby were captained by Matt Oakley, a Saints player for more than a decade before his exit last summer when he turned down a one-year deal at St Mary's to sign a two-year contract at Pride Park.

Oakley lifted the play-off winning trophy and also scooped the man of the match award and with all that a place in the Premiership next season much to his delight.

But former Saints striker Kevin Phillips was on the losing team and admitted his last chance of playing in the Premiership again may have gone with the result.
