Fraser Forster will today discover whether his European Championship dream is still alive as Roy Hodgson today announces his England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands.
The Saints stopper has been sensational since his return from ten months out after rupturing his patellar tendon.
Forster picked up the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for February, recognising the immense contribution he has made to Saints since his much anticipated comeback.
The 27-year-old returned to the side on January 13 and promptly kept six consecutive clean sheets. He has only conceded a total of six goals in ten games.
Forster was the regular understudy to England number one Joe Hart before his injury, and had his eyes set on challenging the Manchester City stopper for a place between the sticks before Euro 2016.
If he is to make Hodgson’s final squad then the upcoming friendlies will be a key indicator of how the England boss views his return.
Most would believe that Forster has done enough to be involved in the international set-up again, and if he is picked for the double header of friendly matches, the last squad to be named before Hodgson make his picks for Euro 2016, then it would seem unthinkable that he would miss out on this summer’s tournament.
Also hoping for another call-up is Ryan Bertrand.
The Saints defender has been on fine form. His only problem is that he is competing as a left back at international level, but has often found himself as central defender in either a back three or even a back four in recent weeks for Saints.
Hodgson was set to pick the squad via a conference call with Valencia head coach and his England assistant Gary Neville.
December's news that the former Manchester United defender would make his first foray into management in the Primera Division sent shockwaves around the football world.
Neville gave up his media commitments after being handed the Mestalla reins for the remainder of the campaign, but continued in his role as England coach.
The former right-back has endured a topsy-turvy time at Valencia but will still be joining up with Hodgson's men during the international break as planned.
Nevillie’s commitments in Spain saw him miss last month's England squad meeting at St George's Park, where around 40 of the 47 players called up by Hodgson since the World Cup got together.
Danny Welbeck was among those in attendance despite having not played for the national team since last March, but the Arsenal forward's return to action, and form, means he is set to be included in the squad for this month's friendlies.
Jack Wilshere attended the get-together but remains sidelined with a long-term leg injury, while Arsenal team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also absent.
A knee injury means England captain Wayne Rooney is the biggest name ruled out of this month's matches, joining Manchester United team-mates Phil Jones and Luke Shaw on the sidelines.
United teenager Marcus Rashford is not expected to be included despite his remarkable emergence, but Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge and Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster look likely to be involved after recovering from injury.
Few new faces are expected to make their way into Hodgson's squad, but West Ham captain Mark Noble and Leicester's Danny Drinkwater have been pushing for call-ups.
Hodgson recently said both players were "knocking on the door" and Marc Albrighton, who downplayed his own England chances, believes Foxes team-mate Drinkwater should be included.
Hodgson will not be able to call upon Fabian Delph, Danny Ings and Charlie Austin due to injury, but Newcastle winger Andros Townsend will be hoping to be involved after a hamstring strain.
Everton's Leighton Baines and John Stones are edging their way back to full fitness, while Ryan Mason is injury-free but struggling to get into the Tottenham line-up on a regular basis.
