SAINTS could be on the verge of losing promising striker Leon Best.

The 20-year-old is now out of contract at St Mary's and boss George Burley said: "We've made him a number of different offers in the last few months and he hasn't accepted them.

"It's his prerogative whether he accepts it or not.

"We have been in contact with his agent for the last few months and have virtually matched what he's asked for.

"The club can't force a player to sign and we've done everything we can to satisfy his demands.

"If he doesn't want to sign, it's disappointing."

Burley added: "In this day and age, a number of people have spoken to his agent and maybe the boy's head has been turned.

"But he's out of contract and that's the way it works.

"I haven't heard anything officially but he is allowed to speak with other clubs and, if he goes, a fee would be decided by a tribunal.

"Hopefully, the club would get a fair valuation for a 20-year-old that can play at the top level in the next years."

Burley is waiting on an answer from another young player in the shape of Martin Cranie, who is currently on holiday thinking over his future.
