George Burley has admitted he will have to "wheel and deal" if he wants to bring any more new faces to St Mary's.

Burley completed his first deal of the summer last Thursday when he tied up the permanent signing of Polish striker Marek Saganowski on a three-year contract.

Before that, though, much of the summer transfer talk regarding Saints has concerned who was going to leave rather than who would be coming in to bolster the club's bid for a Premiership return.

With new finances yet to be pumped into the club, Welsh teenage left-back Gareth Bale and Martin Cranie are the two most high-profile players to have left the club during the close season.

Their fees - up to £10m for Bale from Tottenham and £400,000 from Portsmouth for Cranie - helped to balance the club's books AND give Burley the funds to finalise the Saganowski deal.

And Burley is in no doubt that others may also have to depart if he is going to be able to bring in any more new players.

"I have already been to the club to speak to the bank manager to plan ahead and he has given us the green light to go ahead. So I know where we are and what position we are in," Burley said.

"Marek is one of those players we have been able to go ahead with, but there is no doubt we will have to wheel and deal and balance the books.

"There is no doubt there will be changes between now and the start of the season.

"There has been talk of a take-over but that hasn't happened and we have not got the parachute money anymore from last season.

"It doesn't mean we can't go forward, but to do so we will have to wheel and deal. That's the situation we are in because we have not got any new funds in."
