Paulo Gazzaniga may have played his last game for Saints.
The 25-year-old Argentinian keeper is attracting interest from a range of foreign clubs, and Saints are believed to be minded to allow him to move on, either permanently or on another loan.
Gazzaniga spent last season on loan to Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, who were impressed by his efforts and have indicated they would like him back.
French club Nantes are also considering a move for Gazzaniga, while it is understood several other sides have been in touch with Saints to enquire as to his availability.
Gazzaniga has two years remaining on his Saints contract, and so the club could still ask for a reasonable fee for him.
If he were to go out on loan for another season Saints would have to accept that his value would drop considerably as in a year’s time and with just 12 months left on his deal he would not command much of a fee.
Gazzaniga would appear to be surplus to requirements at Saints, and is believed to be keen to play games rather than act purely as an understudy.
Therefore it would make sense for all parties for Saints to let him move on.
Fraser Forster will start next season as the club’s undisputed number one, with Alex McCarthy as his chief back-up.
McCarthy spent much of the last campaign out injured but is keen to make up for lost time.
Veteran keeper Stuart Taylor remains at the club but is unlikely to see much game time.
But with Saints preferring to take three keepers to each match his presence allows Harry Lewis to continue his development below first team level.
Lewis did make a first team debut last season, which indicated how highly Saints rate him, and is, to all intents and purposes, seen as a viable third choice option should the unlikely scenario occur where both Forster and McCarthy are unavailable.
Saints have offered continuity behind the scenes in the keeping department with Dave Watson staying on as goalkeeping coach.
However, it would take a remarkable changes of fortunes for Gazzaniga to return to the Saints first team again.
He joined Saints in 2012 from Gillingham and managed 23 games over four Premier League seasons for the club.
Gazzaniga was never able to really fully establish himself and with no real prospect of playing time last season was allowed a move to Spain to gain further experience.
He got that at Spanish second tier side Rayo Vallecano, playing 22 times over the course of the campaign.
