George Burley believes Adam Hammill will add an extra dimension to his Saints team with his ability to run at defenders.
The Saints boss swooped to beat off stiff competition from England and Scotland to sign the talented 19-year-old on a season long loan deal from Liverpool.
Hammill is very highly rated and can play on either flank, something Saints need.
Down the left they have the option of Andrew Surman or Rudi Skacel.
But things have been more stretched on the right where, at the end of last season, Burley was forced to play central midfield players such as Jhon Viafara.
Hammill spent the second half of last season on loan to Dunfermline where he won rave reviews, helping the club to the Scottish Cup final.
Burley believes he's signed a good player.
He said: "Adam had six months at Dunfermline and that was a good experience for the boy.
"He's a wide player who can play comfortably on the right or left, he loves to run and take defenders on, he's a young lad with a lot of potential and I'm pleased we've agreed he's coming for a season because there were a number of clubs interested.
"He's comfortable either side so it gives us somebody who likes running at defenders and taking people on".
