Sheffield Wednesday have withdrawn their offer for Saints striker Grzegorz Rasiak.

Wednesday boss Brian Laws turned his attention to Saints' Poland striker after former Holland international Patrick Kluivert rejected the offer of a trial with the Coca-Cola Championship club.

But Wednesday have now pulled out of negotiations after claiming they had met Saints asking price, thought to be £2 million, but then been "asked for further financial demands which they were not prepared to meet," according to the club's official website. Laws said: "I have seen the contents of the letter from Southampton and they accepted a substantial offer but they have now changed their demands. It has been very frustrating because they have changed the goalposts." Earlier in the day Laws had said: "We are hoping to make some kind of breakthrough in the next dew days.

"Until we get permission to talk to the player, there is no other issue to be discussed."

He added: "Southampton have been in touch. It's a positive note, they are not telling us to go away.

"I know it has been a long drawn-out process, but the fact that it got out in the open has made it more difficult because everyone is impatient".

Rasiak scored 19 league and cup goals for Saints last season by the end of January, but spent much of the closing weeks of the campaign on the bench.

He has looked hungry and fit in pre-season, though, and has already scored five times - including two in Tuesday's 4-2 friendly win at Exeter.

Saints Boss George Burley will be pleased to hear that Wednesday have withdrawn their offer given he had earlier today stated his intention to keep Rasiak at the club.

He said: "There is no doubt there has been interest and I have spoken to Greg and told him he is very much in my plans."
