Saints suffered their first pre-season defeat as they were crushed 5-2 by Lazio.
Just short of 20,000 fans turned up at St Mary's for Saints' only home pre-season friendly of the summer and saw their side outclassed by the Serie A team.
Saints were 3-0 down after 16 minutes with Goran Pandev, Stefano Mauri and Tommaso Rocchi grabbing the goals.
Mauri and Rocchi later went on to add another each while Saints struck back from a penalty in each half - the first converted by Kenwyne Jones and the second by Grzegorz Rasiak.
George Burley's men now have two friendlies left before the start of the Championship season - at Millwall on Tuesday night and Brentford next Saturday.
