West Brom have completed the signing of Pele for £1m.

The move brings to an end the 29-year-old's year at St Mary's with Saints recouping about what they paid Belenenses for his services last July.

Pele made 44 appearances for Saints last season and scored one goal against Leicester at St Mary's in December.

He was signed as a centre half but struggled with the physical nature of the game in England and instead looked better during a run in the side in the centre of midfield.

His sale will give George Burley extra cash to try and strengthen other areas before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

West Brom boss Tony Mowbray said: "We're delighted to have signed a player who caught our eye at Southampton last season.

"Pele will bring experience and quality - both in and out of possession - to our squad.

"His athleticism and passing ability will also increase the competition for places in midfield."
