George Burley is confident his likely centre-back pairing for tomorrow's season opener can handle Crystal Palace's experienced attack.

The Saints boss is minus both of his first choice centre halves in Claus Lundekvam (injured) and Darren Powell (suspended).

That means Chris Makin, who is naturally a full-back, and loanee Alan Bennett, who has yet to make a competitive first-team appearance in England, will be paired at the heart of defence.

Regular midfielder Jermaine Wright could also be selected ahead of Alex Ostlund at right back - as he was in the final friendly at Brentford last week - while Gregory Vignal will make his senior Saints debut at left back.

Palace boss Peter Taylor has admitted tomorrow could be a good time to face Saints following their defensive worries.
