Derby have not given up on signing Kenwyne Jones.
Saints have turned down two bids from the Rams for their Trinidad & Tobago international, the last of which was £4m with £1m in add-ons.
But the Premiership new boys are expected to try again before the transfer window closes at the end of the month to see if they can persuade George Burley to cash in and use the money to fund several new signings.
Derby assistant boss David Kelly said: "As far as I am aware, the deal is not dead yet.
