GEORGE Burley was left ruing bad luck and some poor defending as his side crashed out of the Carling Cup at Peterborough last night.

The League 2 team, nicknamed Posh, caused an upset in the first game of the first round by defeating Burley's Championship side 2-1 at London Road.

Saints fell two goals behind, the first a Grzegorz Rasiak own goal and the second a defensive mix-up that allowed George Boyd to stab home, before the Polish striker pulled one back.

However, Saints couldn't push on and find an equaliser and went out of the competition at the first hurdle.

Burley said: "It was a good cup tie. We knew it was going to be tough but first half I thought we were well on top and had a few opportunities.

"Peterborough were never in to the half and we conceded an own goal and maybe that happens at the moment when things aren't going for you and cup ties are won and lost over a little bit of luck.

"The second goal we gave away we should have been stronger."
