George Burley's thoughts this week must be dominated by one main issue - how he can shore up his defence.

Right across the backline there is food for thought for the Saints boss.

After two games that is the main area of concern with six goals conceded, four at home against Crystal Palace and another two at Peterborough.

And it's not just the number of goals let in that has been the problem but the manner in which they have been leaked.

Many of the errors have been fundamental, basic and should be a rare occurrence at this level.

To concede goals to simple punts down the field is not good enough - no matter what level you play at.

There also appears to have been breakdowns in communication, players drifting out of position and a general lack of cohesion that have led to the troubles.

The first thing to say is that it's hardly a surprise this has happened.

It was clear to almost everybody who cast a second glance at the squad list before the start of the season that it was short on defenders.
