They're enjoying a taste of the Orient down at Chilworth Golf Club after opening up an impressive new pavilion extension.

The 19th hole has a Chinese theme with a lavishly decorated Bejing restaurant the focal point of an extensive six-month refurbishment programme.

Included is a traditional bar and lounge area for members and guests and a spacious new shop for the professional Darren Ewing and his staff.

Chilworth marked the opening of the new extension with a charity pro-am event featuring 20 of Hampshire's top professional players and won by the South Winchester assistant Andrew Cloke The event, which raised more than £1,000 for Red Lodge School, was sponsored by the club's new Bejing restaurant, part of an on-going Chilworth effort to raise money for the special needs school in Southampton.

Experienced Southampton Chinese restauranter Jenny Fung is managing the new facility which gained instant approval from the players who tucked into a sumptuous buffet after the 18-hole event.

Cloke picked up his second victory of the season in style with a three-under-par 66 - one ahead of Meon Valley's Sam Boyce.

Hampshire PGA captain and order of merit leader Kevin Saunders shared third place with Ben Johnson (Stoneham) on 68.

The South Winchester assistant opened up strongly with birdies at the first and third holes before going on to better par at the eighth, 15th and 18th holes. Cloke played the back nine in just 30 strokes.

He also triumphed in the pro-am team section, leading Chilworth members Pete Masterman, Fred Bendall and Alan Southwell to victory ahead of Russell Tate with Russ Joy, Mike Powey and Colin Jones.

Chilworth has come a long way since proprietor Jerry Garner opened up with an eight-bay driving range in 1978. In just over 20 years since then it has gone from a nine to 18-hole pay as play complex with clubhouse and changing rooms.
