Mohamed Elyounoussi is a major doubt to face Everton.
The £16m summer signing excited Saints fans with his second half display in the goalless draw with Burnley in the season opener at St Mary’s.
However, he has since felt a tightness in his hamstring and is unlikely to figure at Goodison Park this weekend.
There is better news regarding Stuart Armstrong, who limped off against the Clarets but has recovered well.
Saints boss Mark Hughes confirmed: “We had a couple of issues after the game.
“Stuart Armstrong got a knock but he looks ok and has trained today so I don’t anticipate him missing out.
“Moi Elyounoussi got a bit tense in his hamstring. He trained with the physios and went better than the physios thought but we will see how he is.
“Even if he doesn’t have a reaction there is a feeling maybe we err on the side of safety but we will see.”
