Andrew Surman could find himself at the centre of an international tug of war after his impressive display against Stoke.

The young midfielder scored Saints' first goal and created the second in his best performance of the season.

Surman is eligible to play internationals for either England or South Africa.

And there to watch him in the crowd on Saturday were England under-21 boss Stuart Pearce and South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.

The two were sat just a few seats apart in St Mary's but could very soon be doing battle over his services.

Pearce will have been briefed about Surman's ability by one man who knows him well - Steve Wigley, the former Saints boss and Peace's current England Under-21 coach.

For his part, Surman says he will just get his head down, keep performing and see what happens.

He said: "I had an inkling they were watching but you don't really think about it because you would end up putting pressure on yourself.

"I've got belief in my own ability and I have to perform and see what happens.

"It's nice to be wanted but we'll just have to see what happens".
