MOHAMED Elyounoussi has urged Saints to continue moving in the right direction at Brighton in the Carabao Cup tonight.
Saints have one point from their first three Premier League games and suffered a tough defeat to Leicester at St Mary’s on Saturday.
Elyounoussi, a £16m summer signing from FC Basel, who is eager to continue to improve after his first Saints start against the Foxes, is keen for Mark Hughes’ men to build on the best bits of their 2-1 loss to Claude Puel’s men.
“It’s good that it’s just a couple of days until the next game so we can forget about this one,” he said.
“If we maintain this level like today, the aggressiveness, the way we played, we should have a good chance.”
Against Leicester, Saints were generally in the driving seat but could not hold onto their lead after Ryan Bertrand fired in a superb effort on 52 minutes.
They wilted as Demarai Gray hit back four minutes later, before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who will be banned for tonight’s match, was sent-off after receiving a second yellow card for diving.
Harry Maguire struck late in the game to give Leicester victory, but Elyounoussi was pleased with how Saints started the game.
“If you see the first two games we were not there in the first half, as we were today, we were spot on from the first minute, won corners and we were aggressive and played good with one touch football,” the 24-year-old said.
“We created enough chances to score more goals, so we have a lot to improve in the box, but I think there are a lot of positives to take from this game.
“If we keep working as we did today, the three points will come.”
He added: “For the confidence we need to win, but everyone did a great job today and should have confidence to bring to the next game at Brighton away.
“We know it will be a tough one but I feel confident we will continue from where we started today to take into the next game.”
Elyounoussi reflected on his first start and is keen to get some regular game time under belt, after a hamstring injury kept him out of the 2-1 defeat Everton just over a week ago.
He said: “It’s a long time since I’ve played more than 70 minutes. Obviously with a small injury it had a little impact on my fitness but I think I was alright.
“I should do more in front of goal and risk a bit more, but in time it will come and I’m looking forward to the next game.”
