ANDREW Surman celebrated his England under-21 debut with a goal in the last minute tonight.

The Saints midfielder, a second half sub, completed England's 3-0 Euro 2009 qualifying win in Montenegro after being set up by his former St Mary's colleague Dexter Blackstock.

Gabriel Agbonlahor's impressive week had earlier continued as Stuart Pearce's men started their qualifying campaign well.

The Aston Villa forward scored the second goal against Chelsea on Sunday and did the same at the Pod Goricom Stadium after Nedum Onuoha opened the scoring.

Agbonlahor had his commitment questioned in the summer when his missed the Euro finals after the Football Association could not contact him to confirm his call-up, but he now has two goals in two games since his return.

With support coming from ex-Saint Theo Walcott, England had too much pace for Montenegro, who won in Bulgaria in their opening games and were slick going forward at times.

Pearce's youngsters could have had an even bigger win, but for some poor finishing as they looked to start a big weekend for English sport with victory.

It was the first competitive match hosted in Montenegro since independence from Serbia, and having England as visitors added to the excitement in Podgorica.

England's black players had been racially abused against Serbia in the summer and Rangers players were taunted at this venue earlier in the season, but thankfully there was no repeat this time around.

It was still a hostile crowd, and goalkeeper Joe Hart had an object thrown at him late on. The fiery home support was silenced within six minutes of kick-off.

James Milner set a record for Under-21 caps, beating Scott Carson's 29, and the Newcastle midfielder started the move for the opener by swinging a quickly taken corner to the back post.

Skipper Steven Taylor headed back across goal, Agbonlahor got a touch to lob the goalkeeper and Onuoha headed into the empty goal.

Simon Vukcevic forced a save from Hart after his trickery earned him space, but England added a second in the 10th minute.

Walcott slid Agbonlahor through and the Aston Villa forward, taking advantage of Ivan Janjusevic's indecision, finished with confidence.

Montenegro looked for a way back into the game and Hart had to tip over from Marko Cetkovic, and Vukcevic cleared the crossbar.

Mark Noble squared up to Ivan Fatic after committing a foul, then received a booking for charging down the free-kick.

The West Ham man almost put through his own net when his flying clearance just shaved the crossbar, while Craig Gardner also had to block a shot from Slaven Stjepanovic.

Gardner had been played as an emergency right-back for his club but was enjoying his more familiar role in midfield, throwing himself around to stifle the hosts.

Pearce's youngsters remained a threat on the counter-attack and Walcott blazed over the crossbar twice when he was found on the overlap.

With six minutes left in the first half, Janjusevic produced an amazing save to deny Noble at point-blank range.

Montenegro brought on striker Bogdan Milic at half-time and the striker had to be closed down quickly after a Stevan Jovetic found him in the area.

Luka Tiodorovic was also brought on but his careless pass almost set up a chance for Walcott.

Janjusevic was forced into more work, Milner making him to save with a shot heading towards the top corner, then Onuoha had a header cleared off the line from an Andrew Taylor corner.

Walcott was taken off in the 63rd minute for Fabrice Muamba as England looked to protect their lead.

They could have added to the goalscoring when Milner stabbed towards goal with Janjusevic out of position but his team-mate Matt Derbyshire blocked the effort.

Janjusevic then saved from Milner and Gardner before the full-time whistle.

There was still time for Surman to come on and finish after Blackstock headed into his path.
