George Burley has insisted that Andrew Surman is going nowhere.

Surman has been linked with a January transfer window bid from Pompey following his impressive recent performances for England U21s.

The 21-year-old is expected to make his second appearance for England U21s in Bulgaria tonight after scoring on his debut in a 3-0 win over Serbia & Montenegro on Friday, when he was watched by Pompey coach Tony Adams.

Pompey signed Martin Cranie, Surman's former youth teammate, during the summer but Surman signed a four-year contract with Saints six weeks ago, saying: "I'm playing for the club I've supported all my life but I wouldn't have signed if I didn't think the club was going forward."

Burley said: "Andrew is not for sale. We're in a strong position financially - we only sold Kenwyne Jones because he wanted to go but Andrew is perfectly happy here, as he showed by signing his new contract.

"Premiership clubs will always look at the best young English talent in the Championship and that's what Andrew is so we have to expect this sort of speculation.

"But I can assure all Southampton fans that Andrew won't be for sale."
