NATHAN DYER said he would have swapped his first league goal for a Saints win at Watford yesterday.
The young midfielder, who has been outstanding in the last few games, showed again why he is so highly rated with a top display at Vicarage Road.
The icing on the cake was Saints' second goal, a superb individual effort from Dyer to mark a deserved first league strike for the club in his 39th appearance.
Dyer's only two previous goals for the club had come in the League Cup - at Southend in August 2005 and against Yeovil 12 months later.
He had scored twice in the Championship, though, while on loan to Burnley in the autumn of 2005.
But the winger was more concerned with yesterday's defeat for Saints, which was a harsh lesson for the team.
He said: "I'd like to score more like that but I've got to keep working hard and trying to keep it going.
"It was my first league goal (for Saints) and it was good to get off the mark but I would have swapped it for the three points.
"I want to keep improving, like I have been, and keep learning from the manager and hopefully keep moving on the right hand side and keep playing regularly.
"I've got a lot to learn but it's been a good start to the season for me."
