SAINTS have placed a £35million price tag on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The club captain has attracted interest from fellow Premier League sides Tottenham and Everton as he has just over one year left remaining on his St Mary’s contract.

Saints feel as though £35million is a fair reflection in terms of an asking price due to the fact he’s only 24 years old, he’s their skipper and has hopes of playing in the Champions League.

Because of Hojbjerg’s desire to play in Europe’s elite club competition, Saints believe their price tag is the going rate for teams in the tournament.

Chief executive Martin Semmens made it clear that the St Mary’s side will sell the Danish international if he doesn’t sign a new contract and if a buyer stumps up the cash.

However, Saints’ preference is to see Hojbjerg follow in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s footsteps and commit his long-term future to the club.

In a recent interview with German media outlet SPORT1, Hojbjerg revealed he wants to play at a “higher level” than he currently is.

He said: "I know what I want, the club knows it too.

“I want to play at an even higher level than I am currently. The relationship between me and Southampton is fantastic.

“The club gave me the platform to grow. I'm not saying 'Goodbye' and I'm focused on my club, but my goal is very clear: I want to win the Premier League and the Champions League.

“I gained a lot of experience so that I could move on to develop elsewhere. When I was 23 I became a captain in a Premier League club. Now I’m hungry to get to the next level.”

Saints currently have Tottenham’s Kyle Walker-Peters on loan until the end of the season but it’s been suggested they won’t be looking to make that deal permanent.

Walker-Peters has made just one appearance since arriving at St Mary’s which came in the home defeat to Burnley back in February.

The right-back, who joined the club to fill the void left by Cedric, wasn’t 100 per cent fit when turned up and, therefore, had to play catch up before trying to make his mark.

Although it’s unlikely he’ll stay at the club beyond the summer, an agreement is in place for him to stay until the 2019/20 campaign is finished.
