RALPH Hasenhuttl believes Danny Ings has "something special" at Saints and urged his star man not to "throw this away" to try and earn slightly more money elsewhere.
Ings has been in brilliant goalscoring form in the past 12 months, which saw him linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur over the summer.
The 28-year-old remained at Saints, where he has now netted 38 goals in 75 appearances since joining, initially on loan, from Liverpool in 2018.
His contract at St Mary's is due to expire in 2022, with Saints keen for him to extend his deal.
Speaking to Sky Sports, boss Hasenhuttl said: "It's not normal that you get a situation like he has in a football club. This is something special I think.
"I don't want him to throw this away for a (bit) more money.
"I speak to him once or maybe two times a month about this topic.
"We must concentrate on our job we have to do here. I don't speak to him every week about his contract, this is not my job.
"It's his responsibility. He has to take the decision and nobody else. He must then also live with the fact that he did this or that."
A host of players, as well as Hasenhuttl himself, have penned new deals at Saints in recent months.
The latest of those came this week with defender Jan Bednarek signing a fresh four-and-a-half year deal.
"We want to sign Ingsy also," said Hasenhuttl.
"I think every player that signs now is a good message also for him that he sees we are committed to this club and want to build something up here."
