BOSS Ralph Hasenhuttl says Saints "paid the bill" for Alex Jankewitz's "horrible start" at Old Trafford.
The teenager was handed his first start for the club in Tuesday night's trip to face Manchester United.
However, Jankewitz's evening did not last long, sent off with 81 seconds on the clock by referee Mike Dean after catching Scott McTominay with a reckless challenge.
Replays showed the stud marks clearly visible on McTominay's thigh, who recovered and went on to score as the hosts ran riot, winning 9-0 at Old Trafford.
Discussing the impact of Jankewitz's dismissal, Hasenhuttl said: "A young lad, who played for the first time in the Premier League.
"He knows that he made a big mistake. Therefore we paid the bill. That’s it."
He added: "It’s a young player who has to learn a lot. But it was a horrible start for him."
Jankewitz, a Switzerland under-21 international, has played three times for Saints this season in league and cup.
