ALEX Jankewitz helped Switzerland get their UEFA European Under-21 Championship campaign off to the perfect start, with victory over England.

Saints youngster Jankewitz played the full 90 minutes in midfield at the Bonifika Stadium in Koper, as Aidy Boothroyd's Young Lions were edged out 1-0 by the Swiss.

The only goal of a tight Group D affair came in the 78th minute, when Nice forward Dan Ndoye looped a shot up over Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and into the top corner.

Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly was one of the England players to go closest to breaking the deadlock during the first half in Slovenia, but his header drifted wide of the post.

In truth, Switzerland could have been ahead before they did find the net with Bastien Toma and Brighton's Andi Zeqiri squandering good chances.

Jankewitz was booked late on in the contest as Switzerland saw out the victory.

The 19-year-old could be back in action on Sunday against Croatia, before the group stage then rounds off on Wednesday when Switzerland face Portugal.

The knockout rounds of the competition are scheduled for May and June.
