SHANE Long came off the bench, but could not prevent Republic of Ireland from falling to an embarrassing 1-0 home defeat to Luxembourg.

The striker, currently on loan at Bournemouth from Saints, was introduced in place of Callum Robinson with 17 minutes to play in Dublin.

The World Cup qualifier was at that stage goalless, but Ireland were stunned by an 85th-minute long-range winner, fired in by Dynamo Kiev forward Gerson Rodrigues.

Defeat leaves boss Stephen Kenny still winless since taking over from Mick McCarthy, with three draws and seven defeats from his 10 matches in charge.

The Boys in Green sit bottom of their qualification group, with no points from their two matches having also lost to Serbia last week.

Ireland return to action on Tuesday for a friendly against 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar in Hungary.
