FOLLOWING the 3-1 second-half defeat to Everton during the opening weekend, expect manager Ralph Hasenhuttl to make at least a couple of changes to his starters.
However, something he was clear about was his defence of a lack of substitutions – suggesting that after he made the changes was when Saints conceded the majority of chances.
This could suggest that he does still favour the starters selected, but we identify some areas where we think personnel will differ.
Hasenhuttl confirmed that, Will Smallbone aside, he has a fully fit squad to select from.
Striker Adam Armstrong bagged a brilliant finish to give Saints the lead in the first-half at Goodison Park, and will lead the line again against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United.
Here is how we predict Hasenhuttl will line up…
Goalkeeper
This one is a 50/50 really, we predicted Fraser Forster last week and that’s what I’d probably line up with. But given that Hasenhuttl favoured Alex McCarthy against Everton, it’d be odd to chop and change already. Forster’s wages are also reportedly very high, and with both keepers contracts expiring next summer it’s highly likely the club see more chance of a future with McCarthy.
Defenders
Although Tino Livramento did well, Kyle Walker-Peters should regain his starting spot. Jack Stephens was preferred last week but we could see Jan Bednarek return – despite his own goal and red card in the last United contest. Mohammed Salisu and Romain Perraud are likely to retain their starting spots.
Midfielders
James Ward-Prowse, fresh off a new five-year contract, and Oriol Romeu will again command the team from midfield. However, where we expect to see the most significant changes follows. Theo Walcott was ineffective against Toffees and Stuart Armstrong will replace him. Moussa Djenepo was also subpar, but Hasenhuttl’s tendency to play him at left-back makes us think he could still fancy him to deal with the attacking quality of United. Nathan Tella would be unlucky to miss out, though.
Attackers
We expect to see the same attacking line-up, with Che Adams and Adam Armstrong – after the pair linked up for the debutants first Premier League strike last Saturday. Could we see the first introduction of Armando Broja from the bench?
