RALPH Hasenhuttl could not hide his bemusement at Moussa Djenepo's shocking miss at St James's Park, insisting: "We have to score."
With the game locked at 0-0 midway through the first half, Saints had the chance to take the lead against Newcastle.
Moi Elyounoussi's shot deflected kindly into the path of Tino Livramento, in space inside the box.
The full-back unselfishly squared it for Djenepo, free inside the six-yard box, but the Malian inexplicably turned the ball over the crossbar.
Djenepo went on to miss another good chance minutes later, before curling narrowly wide in the second half.
Saints went on to salvage a 2-2 draw thanks to James Ward-Prowse's stoppage time penalty, after Elyounoussi had earlier netted.
Discussing Djenepo's incredible miss, Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo: "You can try it 10 times and you cannot make it again then you kick it over the bar from one-metre distance.
"This is an absolutely unbelievable chance that we have to score normally."
Djenepo, 23, has started all three Premier League games for Saints so far this season.
He has netted four goals in 54 appearances since joining from Standard Liege in 2019.
