RALPH Hasenhuttl has admitted he is “frustrated” by a toothless Saints performance at St Mary’s, adding: “In the moment we are struggling with finding the way to the back of the net.”
Saints ended the first half the stronger of the two teams and were well on top of the visiting Wolves, but failed to find a breakthrough for a third successive Premier League match.
Unlike in the previous two, a glimpse of quality from Mexican striker Raul Jimenez was enough to unseat Jan Bednarek and finish past Alex McCarthy to seal a first loss in five for Hasenhuttl’s men.
Reflecting at full time, the Austrian boss said: “Yes, we are disappointed, because in the moment we are a little bit struggling with finding the way to the back of the net.
“This is a little bit frustrating to be honest, three games without a goal in the Premier League and the chances were definitely there today, maybe not big ones but we had a good moment in the second half I think, and a goal in this moment it looks different.
“But they score and then it is even more difficult. Yes this is the situation we are in at the moment and we have to be very clear about not scoring.
“There was always a blocked shot or the goalkeeper made a save, much more than they had to be honest, but there is one moment where Raul Jimenez shows his qualities and defending not properly in the moment and that’s the goal.”
Asked if he understood supporters' frustrations at the full time whistle – from those who stayed until the very end – he insisted he does.
Hasenhuttl added: “Yeah sure, if you’re losing games and not scoring goals then you are frustrated, I am also frustrated."
On the desperate defending that helped guide Jimenez towards the Saints penalty area, Hasenhuttl refused to blame one player.
He said: “I think to perhaps speak about a player here that everyone knows, and can see the situation, can see that he can defend better in that situation.”
