RALPH Hasenhuttl revealed Fraser Forster was back in training with Saints and had an opportunity to feature in goal at West Ham on Boxing Day.
The 33-year-old had been sidelined with a muscle problem earlier this month, meaning he was unable to deputise when Alex McCarthy picked up a hamstring injury.
That led to Saints drafting in Willy Caballero as keeper cover, who had played the past two Premier League games.
But Hasenhuttl revealed former England keeper Forster was back in contention to stake his claim.
“Alex McCarthy is still injured but Fraser is better now,” said the Austrian boss.
“He is training with the team - there is an opportunity maybe also for the weekend.”
Hasenhuttl had already been boosted by the return of Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams to training.
He also revealed fellow frontman Adam Armstrong had overcome a calf problem to be back in sessions with the squad.
The former Blackburn ace was forced off against Arsenal with the issue and missed the trip to Crystal Palace last time out.
Hasenhuttl added: “Adam Arma is also back in training, joining Stuey and Che who are back. We have a few more alternatives, yes.”
