SAINTS remain focused on the task at hand according to Jan Bednarek – with no one at St Mary’s getting carried away after an upturn in form.
Impressive performances away at Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the span of four days following a creditable draw with Manchester City have left sections of Saints’ support calling for a late push for Europe, with their side breaking into the top half of the league table.
The external mood surrounding Saints’ fortunes has changed drastically since December, with some pundits and fans predicted a relegation slog for the second half of Saints’ campaign.
Since the turn of the year Saints have tasted defeat just once, at the hands of Wolves, suggesting that the final months of the 2021/22 season could end on a very high note.
When asked if confidence was growing in the Saints camp, Bednarek told the Daily Echo: “We should be satisfied with those results we got the last few weeks, going against three big teams.
“It's been a tough period for us, a very intensive period.
“But we’re happy with this.
“We know that we did a good job, but most important, that we stay humble as a team, that we will keep on going and keep believing that we can get many more good results.
“And I think that's the most important thing - to not to be satisfied, and we’ve done everything we could. It's all about the next game. It's all about commitment in the next game, and that's what we try to focus on.”
Bednarek also revealed what the target was for Saints – a top half finish.
"We have to focus on the next game,” he continued.
"Our target would be the top ten, but that is going to be a tough challenge.
“We know that the competition in the Premier League is on a high level, but we will try to get it and hopefully we can get it.
When asked if the swing of expectations of Saints this season bothered the team, Bednarek responded: “That's part of the game - if you lose, the fans aren't happy, if you win, the fans are happy.
“I think that's the biggest part of the football player, to always stay on the same level of mood, stay always on the same level of attitude, to keep on going, to always do the same thing if you win and if you lose.
“We know our qualities, we know what we can get.
“We know how hard you have to work to get results, if you keep on going, if we keep believing and if you keep performing at the highest level.
“Because the Premier League, the competition is a very demanding one, to be in the top shape to get it, and we will be focused on that.
"I don't know if we can get it, but hopefully we will be able to compete, to perform at the highest level, and I think we have to be focused on the next game.
"That's important for us to live by the game, to live week by week, to win the games, to get as many points as we can."
