RALPH Hasenhuttl revealed that centre-back Lyanco was “really not good” in the past few days, due to the Brazilian’s sister being stuck in war-torn Ukraine.
Lyanco’s sister Lyarah is married to Brazilian footballer Maycon, who currently plays for Shakhtar Donetsk.
Fortunately for Lyanco and his sister Lyarah, she has now returned home to Brazil after fleeing the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
The Ukrainian club confirmed on Monday that the Brazilian members of their squad had managed to safely evacuate the country, finding refuge in bordering Romania.
Speaking about the defender, Hasenhuttl said: “He was not good, for three days definitely not and everybody tried to help him.
“You know that your sister is there, and there was no chance at first to go out and to come out, and now she made it (out) and this is one reality of millions there.
“Millions of people have maybe a relationship with somebody in this country and this is why it affects nearly everybody.”
A clearly distressed Hasenhuttl then went on to state that the entire side were impacted by the scenes coming out of the Eastern European country.
When asked if others in the side were affected by seeing their teammate directly impacted, Hasenhuttl responded: “Definitely.
“We have not got a Ukranian player in our team but we saw in the Premier League what it does to the players.
“They still have to compete and bring the performances and how tough it is when you know that your brothers are fighting for their lives in their country, fighting for their country that is something that you cannot forget.”
Whilst Lyanco is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, Hasenhuttl also revealed that staff at Saints had been helping the summer signing.
“We have in the club people who are taking care of Lyanco, for example,” added the 54-year-old.
“In the last few days he was really not good but, everybody is affected by this. You can feel it everywhere.
“In the end, it’s very positive that the commitment is there for finding a way out of this war.
“There are some brave and smart people who are thinking 24 hours to find the right decisions. I hope they find a way to stop this.”
“It’s hard when you wake up and go to sleep and you are doing nothing else other than looking at what is happening.
“It is hard to find any other thoughts. It is very difficult to concentrate because it is something that changes our world and changes our life.”
